Corbels historically served the primary architectural purpose of supporting ceilings, beams, and shelves. These decorative, yet functional supports typically project out from a wall in an upward direction and often have very elaborate decorative detailing.
With time, these decorative brackets have transformed into an array of varying styles, sizes, and functions, often physically serving as both a support and decorative piece, while in other applications simply appearing as support and having only an aesthetic purpose.
